Introduction
Uncontrolled diabetes puts constant pressure on the kidneys, slowly harming their filtering ability. Small lifestyle shifts, however, make a remarkable difference and lower the risk. Building the right habits allows the kidneys to stay protected and function smoothly for years.
Keep blood sugar under control
The more sugar fluctuates, the faster the kidneys are damaged. Therefore, regular monitoring, medication as advised by the doctor, and proper diet are very important.
Drink enough water daily
A sufficient amount of water helps the kidneys to remove toxins. However, if there is any previous kidney problem, determine the water intake as per the doctor’s advice.
Reduce salt and processed foods
Excess sodium increases blood pressure and increases the risk of kidney damage. So eat less packaged foods, pickles, fast food, and chips.
Make physical exercise a habit
Light to moderate exercise keeps blood sugar under control and helps the kidneys stay healthy. Walking, yoga or cycling are very good.
Regularly test your kidney function
Diabetic patients must undergo kidney tests (Creatinine, eGFR, Urine sugar, kitone body , Albumin) 1-2 times a year.
Eat protein in moderation
Too much protein puts pressure on the kidneys. So take protein as per the doctor’s advice. It is good to eat fish, pulses and eggs in moderate quantities.
Stop smoking and alcohol
These directly increase kidney damage and raise blood pressure. It is best to avoid them for prevention.
