What is Dengue?

Dengue is a type of viral fever, which is spread by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This mosquito usually bites during the day – in the morning and afternoon. There are 4 different dengue viruses.Severe or hemorrhagic dengue can be fatal.

What are the Statistics of Dengue Disease ?

Dengue is a viral infection that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. According to WHO, almost half of the world’s population is now at risk of dengue and an estimated 100-400 million infections occur every year.

How does Dengue Occur ?

This mosquito breeds in clean water that is stagnant by the Aedes mosquito that bites during the day – such as flower pots, coolers, AC trays, etc.

What are the Symptoms ?

  1. Sudden high fever

  2. Pain behind the eyes

  3. Pain in the bones and joints (Breakbone Fever)

  4. Reddish rash on the body

  5. Nausea or vomiting

  6. Weakness

  7. Bleeding from the nose, gums (symptoms of severe dengue)

What Tests are needed to Diagnose Dengue?

  1. NS1 Antigen Test – In the first 5 days

  2. IgM and IgG Antibody Test – To identify the virus

  3. CBC Test – Platelet count and hematocrit are seen

How to Prevent Dengue ?

1. Wear long-sleeved clothes
2. Use mosquito repellent during the day and evening
3. Use mosquito nets – especially for children
4. Keep the house and surroundings clean
5. Clean the vases, AC trays, coolers regularly
